16th Annual Hot Stove Banquet Yields Great Results

By Bobby Coon / Delmarva Shorebirds

SALISBURY, Md. -- There was a great group in attendance at the Delmarva Shorebirds 16th Annual Hot Stove Banquet on Thursday, January 26th at the Wicomico Youth & Civic Center. Those in attendance met the new front office staff members, received updates about the renovations to Arthur W. Perdue Stadium, bid on some great silent auction items, and were treated to the unveiling of the new Fly Together Community Fund Logo.

The Shorebirds established a Community Fund in 2009, but have recently rebranded it as the Fly Together Fund, partnered with the Community Foundation of the Lower Eastern Shore. Along with the name change, the new logo was unveiled at the Hot Stove Banquet. The logo shows an orange cutout of the Delmarva Peninsula in the background with two black shorebirds flying above the script that reads "Shorebirds" on the first line and "Fly Together" on the second line.

There are a number of fundraisers that the Shorebirds host throughout the year in order to contribute to the fund including the Hot Stove Banquet, Jersey Auctions, Community Fund Weekend, Meet the Team Lunch, and Float for the Fund, among others.

The Fly Together Fund allows the Delmarva Shorebirds to participate and contribute to numerous events and organizations in the community such as United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore, Mindfully Anchored, Big Brothers Big Sisters, Ronald McDonald House, Relay for Life, American Cancer Society, Local Little Leagues and Softball Programs, the Hit the Books Program, and Mountaire Thanksgiving for Thousands.

"We wanted to rebrand the Community Fund as the Fly Together Fund to go along with our social media usage of "Fly Together" but to also show the encompassing support of the Delmarva Peninsula. We greatly appreciate the efforts from the Delmarva community and love giving back to it as much as we can," said Shorebirds General Manager Chris Bitters.

Those in attendance also got to learn more about the Baltimore Orioles' minor league system and the process that goes in to drafting and signing players from guest speakers, Orioles' Director of Scouting Gary Rajsich and Orioles' Director of Minor League Operations Kent Qualls.

The silent auction brought in $1,970 in proceeds, which will be contributed to the United Way of the Lower Eastern Shore.
